The Internet2 Connection

The Internet2 Connection is an interactive videoconferencing program that facilitates building friendships and developing cultural understanding among children throughout the world. With the assistance of students from Robert Shaw Elementary School, the program will be featured at the Mariott Marquis in downtown Atlanta from October 28-October 31, 2000. With some of the children at the Emory campus and others at the hotel, they will be using Internet2 technology to talk back and fourth. They will also use mock backgrounds to enhance the illusion that they are actually thousands of miles away from each other.

This provides not only a chance for these child pioneers to experience firsthand the cultural opportunities the program provides, but also the chance to work closely with new technologies and PHDs in computer science. It involves them and engages them in the world of computers that will certainly be their future.

Soon, children from different countries will use the program to teach each other how to turn recycled materials into handmade toys, indigenous to their locale. It will also provide them the opportunity to learn about each other's culture, heritage, lifestyle and more.

This application is the result of a collaboration between WorldPlay, a nonprofit corporation supported by a coalition of organizations, and Emory University. WorldPlay's objective is to encourage creativity and respect among children from various cultures, including both developed and developing nations. As a university-based, multidisciplinary effort, this project provides an opportunity for a team approach, combining both technical and humanities-based academics.
